The Fight for the City Of Weissenfels

    A story has been completed about the fighting of the U. S. Infantry Division in 1945. 

     Last Tuesday, April 15, 2003, a manuscript was turned over to the City of Weissenfels Museum dealing with the four day fighting by elements of the U. S. 69th Infantry Division from the 2nd Battalion 271st Inf Rgt which resulted in the liberation of the City of Weissenfels, 58 years ago, April 15, 1945. 

    Much research over a two year period was necessary by German 1st. Lt. Juergen Moeller of Ansbach, Bavaria, a 43 years of age,  professional soldier for the past 24 years, in cooperation with the Museum, local witnesses to the conflict and historical records gleaned from the 69th's Web site with the cooperation of Joe Lipsius, a veteran of the 69th.  Moeller's leisure time is spent pursuing military history.  

    Juergen read a welcoming speech from the division expressing regrets a representative could not be there for the occasion. 

    There are plans by the Museum to secure a sponsor to put the manuscript in booklet form to be available for all to read.

Bericht über die Kämpfe der US Infanterie Division im Jahr 1945. 

Weißenfels (sch). Am Dienstag vergangener Woche wurde dem Museum eine Dokumentation  übergeben, die, sich mit den Kämpfen um Weißenfels im April 1945 beschäftigt. Nach viertägigen Kampf war die Stadt am 15.04.1945 von der 69. US Infanterie Division eingenommen worden. 

Mehr als zwei Jahre Forschungsarbeit durch den Militärhistoriker Juergen Moeller in Zusammenarbeit mit dem städtischen Museum, Zeitzeugen und der Veteranenorganisation der ehemaligen Soldaten der 69. Infanterie Division waren notwendig, um einen fast lückenlosen Bericht vorlegen zu können. 

Ein von Juergen  Moeller  verlese­nes  Grußwort der amerikanischen Veteranenorganisation verdeutlichte deren Anteilnahme auch noch 58 Jahre nach Kriegsende. Der Förderverein Museum Weißenfels e. V. bemüht sich nun, diese Dokumentation in Form einer Broschüre allen  Weissenfelsern  zugänglich zu, machen, sofern es gelingt Sponsoren für dieses Projekt zu finden.
